Nikos Arvanitis' Twelve Hours series is based on a sitting that took place in the Austrian parliament in July 2018. After intense deliberations, the coalition government of the conservative and far-right parties, together with the support of the neoliberal opposition party, voted in favour of a controversial law that voluntarily allows an increase in working hours from eight to twelve per day and from forty to sixty per week.
The installation consits of grouped sculptural elements from silicone, with soft texture and shades reminiscent of flesh. Installed on stairs, they refer to the activist action which tool place before the contraversial vote. These hybrid sculptures concentrate properties as contradictory as those of stone and flesh, reflecting the restrictions of matter and suggesting the possibility to think beyond the constraints of political and aesthetic boundaries, as soft power objects. Bearing symbolic meanings and ideologies, the flag completes the group as a two-fold symbol of power and freedom. (Text excerpt by Eleni Michaelidi)

Nikos Arvanitis (b. 1979, Athens, GR) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, A, at the Athens School of Fine Arts, Athens, GR (Erasmus scholarship) and at the MFA course "Public Art and new artistic Strategies" at the Bauhaus University of Weimar, DE with scholarships from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the A. S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation. He won the first prize on the "ZeitGenosse Schiller" competition for public art, Weimar, DE, 2005, was nominated for the „5th DESTE Prize“ of the DESTE Foundation, Athens, GR, 2007, and he won the 2nd Prize of the Spyropoulos Foundation Award, Athens, GR, 2009.
His artistic and research work focuses on themes, which consider the structures and possibilities of public space indwelling, the aesthetic perception in contemporary society, the construction of collective identities and the concept of the globalized, spectacular, but also institutional mass culture.
Τhe medium range that his works covers is: painting, drawing, photography, video, sound installations and performances, interventions in public space, music and radio productions.
Arvanitis co-founded the artist-duo Barking Dogs United with Naomi Tereza Salmon in 2005.
Since 2018 he works as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Visual Arts of the Athens School of Fine Arts. Η σειρά έργων Δώδεκα Ώρες του Νίκου Αρβανίτη έχει ως αφετηρία μια συνεδρίαση που έλαβε χώρα στο αυστριακό κοινοβούλιο τον Ιούλιο του 2018. Μετά από έντονες διαβουλεύσεις, η κυβέρνηση συνασπισμού του συντηρητικού και του ακροδεξιού κόμματος, μαζί με τη στήριξη του νεοφιλελεύθερου κόμματος της αντιπολίτευσης, υπερψήφισε έναν αμφιλεγόμενο νόμο που επιτρέπει προαιρετικά την αύξηση των ωρών εργασίας από οκτώ σε δώδεκα ημερησίως κι από σαράντα σε εξήντα εβδομαδιαίως. Η εγκατάσταση αποτελείται από μια ομάδα γλυπτικών στοιχείων από σιλικόνη με μαλακή υφή και αποχρώσεις σάρκας. Τοποθετημένα σε σκαλοπάτια, παραπέμπουν στην ακτιβιστική δράση που έγινε πριν την επίμαχη ψηφοφορία. Τα υβριδικά αυτά γλυπτά συμπυκνώνουν αντιφατικές ιδιότητες, όπως αυτές της πέτρας και της σάρκας, αντικατοπτρίζοντας τους περιορισμούς της ύλης και προτείνοντας τη δυνατότητα να σκεφτούμε πέρα από στεγανά και αγκυλώσεις πολιτικών και αισθητικών ορίων, σαν αντικείμενα ήπιας ισχύος (soft power). Η σημαία, συμβολικός φορέας νοημάτων και ιδεολογιών, συμπληρώνει το σύνολο ως διττό σύμβολο εξουσίας και ελευθερίας. (Απόσπασμα κειμένου: Ελένη Μιχαηλίδη)

Ο Νίκος Αρβανίτης, γεννήθηκε το 1979 στην Αθήνα, όπου ζεί και εργάζεται.
Σπούδασε ζωγραφική στην Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών της Βιέννης (1999 - 2003) και στο μεταπτυχιακό τμήμα MFA “Τέχνη στο Δημόσιο Χώρο και Νέες Εικαστικές Στρατηγηκές” του Πανεπιστημίου Bauhaus της Βαϊμάρης (2004 - 2006) με υποτροφίες της Γερμανικής Υπηρεσίας Ακαδημαϊκών Ανταλλαγών DAAD και του Κοινωφελούς Ιδρύματος Α. Ωνάση.
Κέρδισε το πρώτο βραβείο στο Διαγωνισμό ZeitGenosse Schiller για τέχνη στο δημόσιο χώρο, Βαϊμάρη, 2005, ήταν υποψήφιος για το 5ο Βραβείο ΔΕΣΤΕ του Ιδρύματος ΔΕΣΤΕ, Αθήνα, 2007 και κέρδισε το Δεύτερο Βραβείο Γ. Σπυρόπουλου, Αθήνα, 2009. Το 2014 ήταν Artist in Residence στο Αtelierhaus Salzamt, Λίντς, Αυστρία.
Το καλλιτεχνικό και ερευνητικό του έργο εστιάζει σε θεματικές που αφορούν τις δομές και τις δυνατότητες εγκατοίκησης του δημόσιου χώρου, την αισθητική αντίληψη στη σύγχρονη κοινωνία, την κατασκευή συλλογικών ταυτοτήτων και την έννοια της παγκοσμιοποιημένης, θεαματικής, αλλά και θεσμικής μαζικής κουλτούρας.
Το φάσμα των μέσων που καλύπτουν τα έργα του είναι: χωρικές εγκαταστάσεις και κατασκευές, ηχητικές εγκαταστάσεις και επιτελέσεις, δράσεις και παρεμβάσεις στο δημόσιο χώρο, ζωγραφική, σχέδιο, φωτογραφία, βίντεο, μουσικές και ραδιοφωνικές παραγωγές.
Είναι συνιδρυτής του καλλιτεχνικού διδύμου Barking Dogs United, 2005, ενώ από το 2001 διατηρεί μουσική συνεργασία με τον Hans Joachim Roedelius (Cluster/ Kluster, Harmonia).
Από το 2018 εργάζεται ως επίκουρος καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Εικαστικών Τεχνών της Ανωτάτης Σχολής Καλών Τεχνών, Aθήνα.
